Ananthapadmanabha Swamy Vratam

Anantha Padmanabha is Lord Vishnu reclining on the 'seshashayana' (snake bed). This vrata is observed on the fourteenth day in Shukla Paksha during Bhadrapada month.

The presiding deity of Anantha vrata is Anantha - Sri Vishnu. The Deities Yamuna and Shesha also accompany Sri Vishnu. Anantha means the infinite and the endless. Anantha Padmanabha is Lord Vishnu reclining on the 'seshashayana' (snake bed). This vrata is observed on the fourteenth day in Shukla Paksha during Bhadrapada month.
It is said that Yudhistira was advised by Lord Krishna to perform this vrata for 14 years during their period of vanavasa/exile. There is also a legend about a sage Koundinya who went everywhere in search of Sri Ananta. He had to undergo a lot of hardships before being blessed with the Darshan from Shri Ananta. By performing this puja, it is believed that a person is relieved of all the sins committed during his lifetime.

The number 14 is considered auspicious for this pooja. 14 flowers, 14 fresh and dry fruits, 14 leaves of various trees are required for the pooja. Even the prasadam offered to the God consists of 14 items.

The main ritual during the Vrata is tying of the sacred thread on the hand. This sacred thread is referred to as Ananta Daara. The threads are placed besides the Deity to sanctify them. It is made up of 14 strands. Some make it of 14 knots. Women tie this thread on their left hand and men on their right hand.

It is believed that this vrata should be done for 14 consecutive years; replacing the thread that was worn in the earlier year. In the 15th year, the pooja is concluded with udyapana (donation of gifts to brahmanas).

Anantha Padmanabha pooja renders freedom to the devotees from all their troubles, worries and sorrows. It energizes them to face the challenges of life with greater vigor.

Anantha vrata is performed for the fulfillment of worldly desires. It mainly helps in regaining lost prosperity. It is believed that on the day of Anantha Chaturdashi, the frequencies of Sri Vishnu are in abundance in the Universe. The devotees can easily absorb those powerful frequencies and thus attain the energy from the all-pervasive Lord Vishnu.
